Biography
Clare Gerrard trained in Architecture at the Universities of Manchester and Cambridge, and subsequently in film in Thesis Year at The Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York.
From 1994-2002 Clare worked as a Lecturer at the University of North London (1994-6) and Senior Lecturer at the University of East London (1997-2002). In collaboration with teaching colleagues she evolved a series of experimental and original programmes for using film techniques creatively in design education. This work has been recognised in the commissions by the Higher Education Funding Council of England to make the documentary programme "First Year", (1999) and The Architecture Foundation to make a documentary about consultation processes in urban redevelopment "Crossing Boundaries" (2002). Clare Gerrard has produced and directed a series of animation shorts, with commissions from the RIBA through the Desiring Practices exhibition, Levis Strauss (UK) Ltd, and the International Film School, London.
Between 1994-2008 she worked with Mark Hewitt as founding co-partner of d-squared; a collaborative architectural, art and design practice. The practice made a wide range of projects; from sustainable architecture and urban design to research, product design, film and installation art. Clients included; Department for Education and Skills, British Council, Hayward Gallery, Delancey, Selfridges, Levi’s. Products exhibited at Sotheby’s and sold through The Conran Shop.
2017-2020 Co-founded water kefir drinks company Ferment Revolution Ltd with Nicole Schubert-Nicholas and Teresa Franke.
From 2008 to the present, Clare has been developing her art practice.
